Yoga for the Vital Substances

Somatic Movement, Yoga, and Meditation Series

Nov.8th, 15th, 22nd, 29th, Dec.6th 2026 — 10am-12pm PDT (with replays)

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the body is sustained by five Vital Substances: Qi, Blood, Jing, Shen, and Body Fluids. Each governs a different dimension of health—our energy, nourishment, deep reserves, awareness, and moisture and flow.

This five-class series pairs yoga postures (yin yoga, restorative yoga, and active yoga), therapeutic somatic movements, meditation, acupressure, and breathwork with each substance, offering a practical, embodied way to understand TCM theory from the inside out. We’ll also explore some practical self-care, cooking and nutrition techniques for each Vital Substance!

This immersion is open to all levels and can be used for continuing education credit with organizations like the Yoga Alliance.

This Series Includes 5 Classes:

Each class is two hours and includes a talk and practice session.

Class 1 - Essense

Jing or essence, is our inherited, finite, and precious reserve. This class is about conservation and depth rather than expending energy. We'll practice slow, low-to-the-ground postures and somatic movements that draw attention to the kidneys and lower back, supported stillness, and a deep meditation on rest as an act of preservation.

Class 2 - Qi

Qi, is the animating energy that powers every function in the body. It has many different expressions (e.g., organ, defensive, nutritive, meridian, ancestral). In this class, we'll explore the power of circulation, heat and breath in the body-mind as a direct lever for regulating energy.

Class 3 - Blood

In TCM Blood is more than a fluid. It is the substance that nourishes tissue, calms the mind, and anchors our spirit. This class builds blood through grounding postures and restorative meditation. We'll also discuss other self care methods to support awareness, circulation and settling a restless mind.

Class 4 - Body Fluids

Jinye, or Body Fluids, moisten, lubricate, and allow the body to move with flow and without friction. Expect a wave-like sequence, hydrating twists, and a closing meditation on adaptability.

Class 5 - Shen

Housed in the heart, Shen is our consciousness, radiance, and capacity for presence. Heart-opening postures, seated meditation, and contemplative practices invite clarity and calm alertness. We'll explore the felt sense of being fully awake in one's own life and some ancient readings on cultivating our Spirit inside.
