This course emphasizes developing a practice that cultivates mindful awareness (sati), tranquillity (samatha), and insight (vipassana). In-depth, step-by-step guidance and steady practice will deepen your understanding and help you experience the benefits of this profound tradition.

Foundations in Presence

We begin our program by building consistency in our meditation practice. We’ll explore the Satipaṭṭhāna Sutta and develop tranquillity through four distinct yet interrelated areas: body, feeling, heart-mind, and mental states. We'll also start to cultivate the “7 factors of awakening.” These seven skillful qualities, such as energy, concentration and investigation, offer practical support for our practice.

The Boundless Heart

Mindfulness and loving kindness support and temper one another on the path of practice, and we need them both to progress on our journey. The Pāli word citta refers to both heart and mind, indicating how states of mind and heart are deeply intertwined. We will investigate loving kindness, compassion, appreciative joy, and equanimity and the potential these practices have to awaken the boundless nature of the heart.

Somatic Mindfulness

In this section, we delve into embodied presence and mindfulness as a trauma-informed practice. This rich tradition offers many ways to calm the nervous system and build healthy presence in the body. Some practices we’ll explore are awareness of the elements of earth, water, fire, and wind, walking meditation and gentle yoga. We’ll also use slow somatic movement forms designed to awaken sensory awareness.

Essential Teachings

Throughout our time, we will study many classical teachings and readings as entry points into deeper self-understanding. This section will investigate “the Eightfold Path,” which contains eight aspects of a balanced practice, such as Wise View, Right Effort, and Right Speech. We will also contemplate the Buddha's famous Four Noble Truths. All of our investigation will center around how to use these profound insights in service of our regular everyday lives.

Buddhist Psychology

In this phase of the training we shift into more subtle practices involving mind states and dhammas such as hindrances, aggregates, and sense bases. We’ll also contemplate more complex states and “the three poisons.” By understanding our mind, thoughts, and emotions more deeply, we can better understand our own conditioning, leading to clarity, space, and the natural arising of insight.

Deepening Insight

The final part of our program brings it all together. Meditation is at the core of our practice because it helps us understand how our body, feelings, and mind states drive our choices and actions. The practices of tranquillity and insight reveal the conditioned, impermanent, and selfless nature of our experience. When we understand this we transform how we live and we cultivate our intuitive wisdom and open spacious heart, leading to freedom and peace.
